Brigadier General Cho, Yong Kun

Deputy Commanding General - ROK, Eighth Army

 

Brigadier General Cho, Yong Kun graduated from the Korea Military Academy and was commissioned into the Infantry in 1993.

 

His initial assignment was with the 7th Infantry Division in Hwacheon as a platoon leader. As a 1st lieutenant, he served as ROK staff officer to the Combat Service Coordination Team 1 U.S. Eighth Army at Camp Long.

 

As a Captain, he attended the Infantry Officer Advanced Course at Fort Benning, and served as a Reconnaissance Company Commander with the 11th Division. Later he received his Master’s and PhD. from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology in Ohio.

 

As a Major, he worked with North Korea Policy and UNCOM affairs in the NK policy Division of Policy Planning Bureau, ROK MND, and also served in US Policy Division in International Policy Bureau, ROK MND.

 

As a LTC, he commanded Dora Battalion, 1st ID in Paju and returned to the U.S. Policy Division at ROK MND to work on issues related to U.S. policy .

 

After his promotion to Colonel, he served as the Policy Cooperation OIC in the office of the ROKA Chief of Staff. He commanded the 18th Regiment, 3rd ID in Cherwon. Upon completion of the regiment command, he served as a Director of the North Korea Policy Division, North Korea Policy Bureau, ROK MND.

 

As a General Officer, he served as deputy director of North Korea Policy Bureau, ROK MND, followed by Director General of North Korea Policy Bureau, ROK MND. BG Cho holds a Bachelor’s of Civil Engineering from Korea Military Academy and Master’s Degrees and Ph.D in Operational Research from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology.
